In case of emergency it would be wise to stop in a safe place, outside the carriageway, signaling clearly that your vehicle has stopped. To do so use the warning triangle by day and turn on the car's sidelights or emergency lights by night.
If these are not working, the warning triangle should be placed in a stable location at least 30 meters behind the vehicle.
For mechanical or medical emergencies use the SOS boxes or call the number for Società Autostrade Alto Adriatico S.p.A. 0432 925 111, for Concessioni Autostradali Venete - CAV 041 5497111, for Autostrada Brescia-Verona-Vicenza-Padova 045 8672222 which will put you through to the Main Operating Centres.
Emergency stops when visibility is limited and the consequent operations required, e.g. replacing a flat tire, may expose you to great risk. In this case stop as far as possible from the carriageway and clearly signal the presence of your vehicle and of people using all available means. Turn on your rear fog lamps and your headlights too, as well as the emergency lights.
On some vehicles these lights are positioned on the hatch and cannot be seen when the hatch is open ‐ for example after pulling out your spare wheel: remember to always shut the hatch closed. If you are performing emergency operations make yourself visible, wearing ‐ as required by the Highway Code ‐ the high‐visibility jacket or vest. When carrying out emergency operations keep an eye on incoming vehicles, so as to spot potential danger in time and to prevent accidents.
In case of an emergency stop in the shoulder lane, particularly if visibility is low, all the occupants should step out of the vehicle and keep to the right of the carriageway as far away as possible, in order to prevent incoming cars from accidentally crashing into your vehicle.
